To say that I’m blown away would be an understatement. When I first came across MNTN (pronounced “mountain”) I admit I didn’t pay as much attention as it deserves. Having spent a little time with it I’m simply left (almost) lost for words at the possibilities.
Lukasz Polowczyk explains that, “in a nutshell MNTN was created to solve a problem for the immersive / 3D sound design Studi Taucher. A lot of great cultural projects couldn’t be realized because the clients couldn’t afford the hardware to play back immersive sound.”
Much like the idea of 3D film, hardware setups have traditionally been expensive and therefore prohibitive for the likes of you, me and most sound designers to become truly involved.
The idea behind MNTN was to “create something that off-sets the hardware with virtual processing and allows people to design their own output systems. The current version supports speaker set ups from quadraphonic up to 64 channels, including overheads. But the limitation is just there as most computers can’t process a live signal beyond that, but more channels will be added over time.”
OK. This is impressive. But what about producers using DAWs like Ableton Live, Cubase or Logic Pro? You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d need to spend a bundle on new software DAWs, because “anyone with music production software can use this, as it’s a VST, AU or AAX plug-in, or as a virtual stand alone app.”
Fine. We get that. But we won’t be able to mix on headphones? Actually, you can! “With the binaural function you can mix on headphones and that will translate to whatever amount of speakers are then used in a given space.
If you’re thinking this is too good to true, welcome to my world a few days ago. Surely, there’s a catch? The folks behind MNTN are quite literally moving mountains (sic) and tell us they will be offering this at an affordable price so that anybody who wants to can start creating their own spatial 3D sonic masterpieces. As well as catering for sound designers creating large installation art, cinemas and VR events, MNTN is also perfect for producers and live performers looking to add something extra to their music and enhance the experience of the audience.
Price? We don’t know yet what it’s going to be yet, but you can suggest a price… AND you can download a 30 day free trial and join the BETA testing program now by visiting the MNTN website.
Looks like the immersive audio revolution is really here. And it’s open for everyone thanks to MNTN.
