Super Mario Meets Modular Synthesizers

Check out Jade Wii recreating classic Super Mario tunes with her Squarp Hermod and a selection of tasty modular synths.

Modular synths come in all shapes and sizes but one thing you'll need to have somewhere in your rig is a sequencer - something for example like the Squarp Hermod, an 8-track sequencer and interface for Eurorack systems. It brings together a powerful step sequencer, a CV looper, a real-time effect processor, LFO generators and a complete bi-directional MIDI-USB-CV input/output interface and Ask.Audio author and modular aficionado Jade Wii has been having fun with it.

In this short video from her channel Dawless Jammin', Jade hooks up the Squarp Hermod, her DAW and her modular synth setup to create Super Mario tunes! That's right, the classic chiptune style music from the games many of us remember from growing up - and which are still popular! Check out the video below.

Here's what Jade told us about the project.

"With all of Hermod's extra connections comes experimentations. I knew something like this could be done by loading a MIDI file onto the Squarp Pyramid, so why not give it a shot with Hermod to have it sequence some modular? I found a few mario MIDI files and arranged them accordingly to what would sound good with each module. Rings and Plonk had the Melody and Sub Melody, Akemies Taiko had the Bassline, and the BIA had a few percussive parts.

I think I might have opened the flood gates of my early childhood. Will definitely consider making some more videos using this method with Hermod. Zelda, Tetris? What next?"

What would you like to see Jade recreate using modular gear? Let us know in the comments!
