It looks amazing and I love the UAD stuff. I could be wrong but as far as I know the downside (for me) would be having to buy the UAD plug-ins again separately for a different system. I have an Apollo and a Satellite and already own a bunch of their plug-ins. I might get one of these for mobile recording with my laptop if I could use the plug-ins already authorized (and paid for!) on my studio rig.

Thank you for reviewing this, I was looking into buying one myself! I only have one doubt, how's the quality of the built-in headphone amp? I have a sennheiser HD 650, and I wonder if this can handle it without having to purchase a seperate headphone amp. I know apogees have very good headphone amps, is this comparable to them?

Cliff - I do not believe you have to re-purchase your plugins. Any time I've upgraded or added a UA interface to my system I am able to use all the plugins I currently own with all of my interfaces. Leo, I found the headphone output to be just fine. Headphone volume is a very subjective game, though, so I'm sure what I find just fine others might not feel is loud enough. The headphone output is incredibly clean, and the monitoring interface that UA has made with Console is quite good. I love being able to monitor with compressors, reverb, etc... and know that what's getting recorded to my DAW is 'clean'.

Looks interesting. Any ideas as to why they opted for only one thunderbolt port as opposed to two for the sake of chaining devices?

How good is the latency aspect of the interface?
What is the practical difference between having a single and dual processor?
Does the monitoring have a 'zero latency' capability?

I'd imagine they opted for the one thunderbolt port as a cost measure - that seems to be what most audio interfaces are unfortunately doing. As far as the latency aspect, there is no discernable latency in the monitoring chain. The single vs. dual processor allows for more hosted plugins.

Matt - I just did some more research and you're totally right. The UAD licenses are tied to the UAD hardware not the computer. So as long as the interfaces are registered to the same hardware group the plug-ins can be used on multiple systems. Awesome!

I currently own a Focusrite 8i6. I'm switching from PC to Mac soon so I thought I will upgrade my audio interface as well. I was thinking about the Apogee DUO until now, but this review makes me want to take a serious look at this UAD interface. Any pros and cons to each?

I love the concept of this device. I have an Octa-Capture now, and I've never used more than 2 inputs simultaneously on it. I would upgrade to this in a heartbeat, except, that it has only one Thunderbolt. MAJOR drawback. I'm already daisy chaining into a LaCie Thunderbolt drive and then to a second monitor for my older 2.3ghz MBP. So, UAD, no sale, I can't make it work.

If the Apollo Twin was designed like the MOTU 828X, the reason it only has one Thunderbolt jack is that under the hood it is only FireWire 400 I/O being delivered through a Thunderbolt cable. Theoretically the slowest device you will add to your daisy chain, this is why it needs to be at the end of the last cable hop. Critics of the MOTU 828X called this a dirty trick, but FW 400 is way more than adequate bandwidth for an audio interface with 8 analog inputs plus ADAT, so the Apollo Twin with just two (or 2 plus line) and ADAT should work fine. At some point, true Thunderbolt chips will be arriving on the scene, but for now this will handle all you can throw at it with headroom to spare.
