Mini Modular Synth Q&A: Qosmo Modular

Qosmo Modular makes 12 modules, with more on the way. They focus on originality and build quality, as they told us when we caught up with them recently.

Tiptop Audio and Lattex Plus join together to host MEFF, a two-day modular synthesizer exhibition in the artistically vibrant city of Florence, Italy. MEFF celebrates the manufacturers of Modular Synthesizers and electronic music technology entrepreneurs. It takes place from March 24-25 2018.

To help celebrate MEFF 2018 we partnered up with TipTop (the modular synth company behind the event) and ran some super short, punchy interviews with some of the top modular synth companies.

Here's what Qosmo told us:

1. Why did you decide to create a modular synthesizer brand and when did it first happen?

The story of Qosmo begins two years ago. I'm an electronic training engineer but I've always been passionate about computer science and music. All these passions were disconnected from the other, then one day I said to myself 'but why not join them all in one?' From this was born Qosmo Modular. It gave me the chance to unite all these things into one.

Later the collaboration with Albano and some musicians was added.
We started with the design of the first modules, completely from scratch, only thinking about the classic features. The clones or the remaking of existing modules have never interested us. Our philosophy is to rely on the classics but to add something more, so that each module is different from what already exists.

To date, the Qosmo system has 12 modules and more will come. Analog or digital does not matter as long as they are something more and not a re-edition of what already exists. In all this, care for the components and the construction, made strictly by hand, is what distinguishes us.

2. Name a song you would like to hear re-created using your modular system?

Rather than being used to recreate, I would really like Qosmo modules to be used to create music. We were delighted to see that many musicians, some of them very famous, use our modules, and I think there is no greater satisfaction.

3. Which module you’ve made took you the most effort or time to make and why?

Each module required a certain effort to be created, from the simplest to the most complex. The care we put into both design and construction leads us to be uncompromised in terms of quality. This requires a very high commitment. To be honest, the real challenges begin now that we are starting to make much more complex and less traditional modules. The passion that distinguishes us is only beginning and in the future there will be many surprises.

4. Tell us about a module made by another brand you are most excited about?

I was very impressed by Nerdseq by XOR Electronics. I've been able to try it and I have to say it's a great module.

5. Would you be able to send us a cool one minute video demonstrating your modular system?
