Ever since Apple acquired Camel Audio, the company behind Alchemy, Logic users have been waiting with bated breath to see it (or its technologies) included in the next Logic Pro X update. Well, we need wait no longer, that update is here, now!

There's plenty to be excited about with this release. Of course, the big news is Alchemy and its integration with EXS24 as well as its general sample manipulating abilities. But there's more. From Apple Music Connect features to enhanced MIDI clock (and therefore better sync with external drum machines and MIDI hardware) to new Apple Loops. There very well might be something here for everyone?

After every update there is the process of aliasing the EXS Factory Samples and Ultrabeat Samples folders from /Library/Application Support directory, and the Apple folder from /Library/Audio/Apple Loops directory and replacing the three folders I have on an SSD. That done and investigating Logic 10.2 I found there is no Mellotron plugin. Is this gone, or am I missing something? Alchemy has made the Mellotron archaic?

More toys, otherwise. :)

It looks like a pretty significant update, for sure. I'd recommend caution about updating it if you're in the middle of a project, though...especially if you have a slow (satellite) Internet connection like me. While the intiial download is under 600 MB, when you go to start Logic afterwards, it doesn't open but gives you a dialogue letting you know it's downloading more essential sounds, loops etc. I have no idea how big that download is but it indicated it would take a couple of hours at my connection speed. So, basically, I can't use Logic until I've done this. I have download limitations during the day so I have to wait until after 11 PM to do this. I don't know how my ongoing projects will be affected by the changes. It might be necessary to do a full Time Machine recovery but we'll see. Just something to think about if you're considering doing the upgrade...I'd recommend doing a full Time Machine backup first, just in case.
