How To Create Fat Retro Beats With Reason's Backline Rig Bundle

The Beatmaker Dope Rack Extension lets you create fat, vintage hip hop beats in just a few minutes. Here, Hollin Jones shows you how it's done.

Propellerhead has updated its Backline Rig bundle of instruments and effects to version 4, and there's a brand new course covering all the new modules as well as the existing ones - for a total of 80 videos! And in this short video from the course Reason Rack Extensions 101: Backline Rig V4 Explored, Reason expert Hollin Jones shows off the talents of UJAM's Beatmaker Dope beat-making instrument.

You'll see how to change kits and tweak individual kicks, hi hats, snares and more, as well as dialling in classic vintage effects including lo-fi and hiss, vinyl rumble and similar atmospheric FX. The module also has a bunch of built-in preset patterns including intros, verses and choruses, and you'll see how to change the swing, speed and quantize values of these to alter the feel. Of course you can also play the instrument by hand or import your own MIDI loops as well as using the built-in patterns, and there's individual track outputs for ultimate flexibility.

Check out the rest of the videos in this course for a complete guide to all 80 of the instruments and effects included in the Backline Rig V4 bundle!
