Quelle est assez haut pour Salut-Resolution Audio?

How high should audio engineers go? (We're talking about high-resolution audio of course!) Joe Albano explores one of the digital theory behind a divisive topic amongst music and audio professionals.

Ok, alerte spoiler

The (Very Simplified) Basics

CD

Please Sir, May I Have Some More..

A Bit of This, a Bit of That

Wrap-Up

I don't see how can you leave out the benefits of running software synths in oversampling mode. A Synth like Monark was made to be run in a higher sample rate according to Native Instruments. Nor do you mention the potential upsides of having some projects in higher sampling rates because you want to avoid oversampling conversion mode in certain plug-ins and instead let them work at the same sample rate throughout the processing chain. Usually this works out well the normal way with oversamplingl, but this does depend on what plug-ins you use.

I have actually only done the first part with most of my (soft) synths and have been surprised how well it sounds with synth sources at at 88..2 in a 44.1 project.

Hi Mik..

You're right, software instruments are one application where oversampling can potentially make a more noticeable difference—especially with creative applications that involve more extreme sample manipulation, which can sometimes clearly benefit from higher sampling rates. I didn't get into that for two reasons—the article was intended to be focused on playback/distribution more than processing, and it was already long and technical enough (especially before I edited it down!).. ;-)

As I've always understand it, most plug-ins that oversample (for maximum clarity with certain kinds of intensive processing, like some modeling emulations) will be fine doing that internally (if you enable it), regardless of the session settings..

I also didn't get into the whole issue of people listening to all those pristine hi-res audio productions as MP3s/MP4s, but I guess that's an issue for another day.. ;-)

Cheers,

Great article. 24-bit for recording, dithered 16-bit for playback. 44100 or 48000 for sampling rate. All exceeds human hearing and microphones, etc. I record my LPs with these settings and love the reaults. Mybhearing tops out at 13K HZ anyway. Inhave run many tests on my own hearing. Cannot tell the difference at higher rates than these. But I can easily tell the differnece with MP3 lossey and lossless.
