Behringer Announces Solina String Ensemble Prototype & Shows Off Tasty Photos

The Solina String Ensemble was a fully polyphonic multi-orchestral synthesizer with a 49-key keyboard that was distributed by ARP from 1974 to 1981. It's now being recreated by Behringer.

It's not a completely unexpected surprise when Behringer announces a new synth especially so soon after Superbooth20 Home Edition... so here it is!

"We knew they were planning on clong the Solina String Ensemble and here is what Uli says about the first prototype:

"We’re very excited to now share with you the first prototype of our Solina String Ensemble. As you can see we’re using rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printers to speed up the process.

"This is actually not a trivial product - just look at the vast amount of analog components.

"The Solina is now on the way to Germany to our innovation team who will implement the firmware and hopefully soon we will be able to let you hear the first beautiful string sounds.

"Thanks for all your encouragement.

Uli "

The Solina String Ensemble was used by notable artists such as Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, Herbie Hancock, Bernie Worrell,  Fun Lovin' Criminals, The Cure, Gorillaz, The Chameleons, The Carpenters, Joy Division, Neil Young, Air, and many others.

The Solina String Ensemble, also known as the ARP String Synthesizer, was fully polyphonic with six tones (violin, viola, trumpet, horn, cello, contrabass), 2 LFOs, a chorus effect and 49 keys.

We'd expect the Behringer version to improve upon these features and add eurorack compatability, MIDI, amongst other features as they've done with every synth re-creation to date. You can see quite clearly on the front panel the features like MIDI In, etc. And you can fully appreciate the complexity of the instrument from these photos of the internal circuit boards...

Just before publishing, Behringer releases some better photos of the prototype synthesizer (included in this article) in response to requests from their Facebook audience. They added,

"Please remember that this synth is still in development and hence there is no launch date yet. However, we’ll certainly keep you informed and hopefully soon provide a video."

Interesting to see what this does to the prices of the streichfett, especially when it's innards are compared to this...

I have several "B" synths and I like them I also have 4 Waldorf's including the streichfett also the Arturia V and UVI strings. I Have my original Yamaha SK which also was a string machine. Would I buy this at the right price. Yes
