A question about point 6: Do you also need to compress a synth bass that's not velocity sensitive? Don't those notes all have the same volume? A compressor wouldn't do much then.

I do yes, especially when the bass line strays into different ranges. Some synth tones have a very different energy in a mix when played higher up the scale for example. Typically I'd use a side chain to compress higher notes more than lower ones, though it depends on the exact synth sound.
