Racks are one of Ableton Live's most powerful features. In this workshop, Noah Pred shares his pro tips for building them bigger and better than ever.

1. Chain Selector Morphing

Three Instrument Rack Chains with crossfades programmed from one to the next; at the current Chain Selection value of 40, the Sub Chain is fully audible, with a bit of the Chords Chain starting to fade in.

2. Dynamically Reactive Zones

Velocity Ranges distributed evenly between four Chains with no fades.

3. Siblings & Twins

Copying values to Siblings; note the option to map parameters directly to Macros without entering Macro Map mode via the same context menu.

4. Macro Navigation

Navigating Macro Mappings in the browser, ordered alphabetically by parameter Name.

5. Macro Programming

Constraining Macro ranges – and using the Invert Range option.

6. Better Rack Mixing

Instrument Rack mixing revealed – note the nested Rack hierarchies.

7. Default Bootstrapping

Saving an Instrument Rack as my Default Instrument Rack Preset with Macros pre-named and colored, the Chain Selector already mapped to the Morph Macro, and three Chains, each with a Pitch MIDI Effect to easily stack Instrument layers at different octaves.
