Don't think of pads as fillers in your tracks. With some creative techniques in any DAW you can transform pads from drones into highly interesting and evolving musical parts.

Thoughtful post, Lynda. Thanks for sharing your creative ideas. A bland or otherwise unchanging pad is ideal material to put through further processing, since it doesn't impose too much character of its own.

To the above, I'd like to recommend multi-effect rhythmic processors which contain several effects types in a single plugin, chained to be used in a complementary and often groovy fashion. I like AdrenaLinn Sync, a gem that was cut off at the knees because of lack of 64-bit support. It was discontinued last month due to further developmental issues, and I don't know if license transfers are possible on the used market. But for anyone who's used it, it has such a signature and brilliant sound.

Currently, there's Dmitry Sches' Tantra which is promising in some similar veins. I've requested a pitched filter feature similar to AdrenaLinn Sync, though, as that would really elevate the melodic possibilities to the next level.

Thank you for your comment Torley! What a shame about the lack of 64-bit support for AdrenaLinn Sync. That change has killed many an awesome plug-in.

Sugar Bytes Effectrix is another multi-effects processor that would work great on Pads. I've had my eye on it for quite some time and i think it would be amazing for Pad sound processing. Plus, there is 64-bit support.

Ah yes, have you played with Sugar Bytes Looperator? It takes a lot of what makes Effectrix great and pushes it a lot further! There's actually an Ambient preset category which works well on pads. Also somewhat in that same vein would be Illformed Glitch (2.1 has some wicked new features including auto preset generation) and Sonic Charge Permut8 (very smart UI design), both of which I own and treasure for their complementary abilities.
